Tangoio marae is the marae of Ngai Tatara, Ngati Kurumokihi, Marangatuhetaua and Ngai Te Ruruku (ki Tangoio). The marae is the centre of hapu life. Hui (gatherings), celebrations and tangi (funerals) are all held at the marae. If you are planning to visit Tangoio marae, but are not familiar with the tikanga (protocols) of visiting a marae, take a look at our section on powhiri (traditional formal welcome).
Whanau, friends and organisations may book the marae for events. If you would like to make a booking, please check the calendar below for available dates, and complete the on-line booking form. Alternatively, you can contact the Marae Secretary to make a booking.

The following is a brief outline of what manuhiri (visitors) can expect at a powhiri (traditional formal welcome) at Tangoio Marae.
Firstly, manuhiri should gather at the waharoa, tomokanga (gateway, entrance) of the marae. Whilst gathering at the waharoa, manuhiri should decide who will do the karanga (call) and whaikorero (formal speech). It is preferred that the kaikaranga (woman doing the call) should be wearing a dress or skirt and that the kaikorero (male doing the formal speech) should be wearing long trousers.
Manuhiri may proceed onto the marae atea (courtyard in front of the meeting house) once the tangata whenua (home people) have called you on.
Paeke is the kawa which Tangoio follows. Paeke allows all the speakers of the tangata whenua to speak first. Once they have completed their korero (speeches), they will then hand the rakau korero over to the manuhiri. Once all the speakers from the manuhiri have finished, the tangata whenua will invite the manuhiri to come and hariru (pressing of noses). A supporting waiata will accompany each korero.
If a tangihanga (funeral) is taking place, it is of utmost importance that all whanau and manuhiri are welcomed onto the marae via a powhiri. Coming onto the marae without a powhiri, or turning up for the burial service only, does not pay homage to the tupapaku (the person has died) and the whanau as a whole.
