Treaty Settlement Negotiations

Information hui by Mana Ahuriri Incorporated (MAI)
Treaty settlement negotiations relating to Te Whanganui a Orotu (WAI 55) & Napier Hospital and Health Services (WAI 692)

Friday, 22 May 2009 / 6pm / PETANE MARAE

At our recent mandating hui, we mentioned that some of the interests of the Tangoio hapu would be negotiated by another entity.That entity has been recently established and is called Mana Ahuriri Incorporated (MAI). MTI and MAI are two different organisations. However, they will be working closely together to negotiate the settlement of the claims of the Tangoio hapu. The important point to remember, is that MAI and MTI will be negotiating different claims.

Remember, MTI will negotiate the settlement of our interests in WAI 299 (Raupatu) and WAI 400 (Ahuriri Purchase). It is proposed that MAI will negotiate the settlement of our interests in WAI 55 (Te Whanganui a Orotu/Napier Inner Harbour) and WAI 692 (Napier Hospital and Health Services Claim). The reason for dividing the claims this way, is our interests in WAI 55 and WAI 692 are shared with five other hapu from the Ahuriri area - hence the need to negotiate the settlement of those claims together under the umbrella of MAI.

At our recent MTI mandating hui, we mentioned that MAI would be having its own information hui soon. We have been informed that MAI's first hui is at 6pm on Friday 22 May at Petane Marae. It is an information hui for all Ahuriri whanau, including whanau from Tangoio Marae (namely Marangatuhetaua (Ngati Tu) and Ngai Te Ruruku ki Tangoio).

The purpose of the hui is to:

  • inform the hapu of developments towards the settlement of the Ahuriri Treaty Claims;
  • inform the hapu about the new entity which has been formed to represent the seven hapu of Ahuriri in Treaty negotiations: Mana Ahuriri Incorporated (MAI); and
  • call for nominations to the committee managing MAI;
  • let whanau know about MAI's upcoming mandating hui in July in Napier, Auckland and Wellington.

Whanau will be able to register with MAI at the hui. There will also be several weeks (after the hui) for whanau to make nominations to the committee.
